Our
early passage began at 0530 to catch the tide round Cap Gris-Nez and it
was just getting light as we cast off and made our way out of Dunkerque's
East Port. The wind had lessened from the previous day but at force four
from the north-west at made for an uncomfortable beam sea, especially
at our customary low speed. We did get some assistance from the tide and,
once everything loose had crashed to the floor, the conditions gradually
improved as we ploughed westwards. There was some confused seas just off
the Cap where the two channel tidal streams meet and we headed slightly
further offshore to avoid the worst of it. Gradually we turned further
south and it was a welcome sight to see the northern breakwater of Boulogne's
harbour come into view.
On
arrival we found the annual Fête la Mer in full swing on the quay
and there was quite a lot of competition for berths in the visitors harbour.
We were hailed by a friendly Dutchman who was on the point of departure
who gave up his prime spot alongside by the ramp and we squeezed in, much
to the concern of the neighbouring yachtsmen. We were soon joined by Erika
and Tabgha, rendezvousing for the BOC Normandy cruise and later
by TimChris who had joined us from Calais. Coincidentally we also
bumped into fellow BOC members Sinemora returning from a TMYC cruise
to Normandy, and even managed to recruit their cruising companions Severa
to the BOC during their stay.
Our
early arrival gave us time to enjoy the sights and sounds of the maritime
festival, which included singing shantymen, and a parade of giants as
well as 'dégustations' of products of the sea, and a host of nautically
themed stalls and entertainment. We wasted no time in arranging our first
'gala' dinner and enjoyed a splendid evening at 'Aux Pêcheurs d'Etaples'
on the Grand Rue.
